In anticipation of her trip home in four days, Meg flipped on the national weather channel to see what was in store. It was another warm day in Phoenix, but the local forecast said to expect a significant cooldown as the country was hit with arctic air. They didn’t call it the “arctic front” or anything ominous—yet. But she figured by Sunday, conditions would worsen for sure.
She recalled those warm carefree days in Kauai with her friends. The foursome each wrote down one of their fears, and every day they—as a group—did something to overcome one fear. The fear of heights was pretty easy to address; they took a helicopter ride. The fear of sharks was a little more challenging to tackle. One of Meg’s friends suggested they go diving in a shark-proof cage, but the other three unanimously vetoed that idea. In the end, snorkeling together around a fish-infested reef did the trick. The third friend had a fear of public speaking, so they sang karaoke—three nights in a row, they loved it so much.
Meg hesitantly told them about her unusual fear of being impaled by something. She rarely shared that fear with anyone, because she couldn’t explain it. She’d had that fear even before the sliver in her leg incident—so it didn’t result from that. And her fear was actually of being impaled in the chest. Her friends thought that it was a very weird, specific fear. After attending the class on reincarnation last year with Sammy, Meg thought maybe she had been jousted off a horse in a previous life—if she believed in that sort of thing. It was difficult to find an activity that would help her get over that fear—aside from jousting or sword fighting. The women decided on zip-lining. Flying rapidly into the unknown seemed as though it could result in some sort of impalement. It turned out to be exhilarating.
Meg loved how they all came home changed women. They were each a little more adventurous, and less protective of their broken hearts. She, for one, felt stronger and braver.
As Meg thought about the idea of doing something to overcome one’s fears, she couldn’t help but wonder if fear was causing her dad’s depression. Was he experiencing some sort of crippling fear? Did he even realize that he wasn’t acting like himself? Did he just want to be lazy and left alone? Meg didn’t know. She wondered if there was an activity she could do with him to awaken his soul a bit, just like she did with her friends in Kauai.
She had an idea, but needed to do some research first. She sleuthed online and found some leads. She wanted to help him put together a presentation having to do with the development of the television—at least from the seventies until now—and find some places where he could give the talk. She checked out a few libraries and community centers near her parents’ home, looking for appropriate venues. There were at least three in the area, and each appeared to have lively events for seniors.
